The best part about the monofin is that it is unbreakable and designed to give you speed in the water. Another notable feature on these mermaid tails is that the bottom can be opened to remove the monofin and allow you to easily walk around without taking the tail off.

Children can choose from six different color options: blue, green, orange, purple, rainbow, and red-blue. To best care for the fabric of the mermaid tails, you should hand wash them and let the hang dry.
With this mermaid tail, you have six different color choices: Aquarius, Key Lime, Mandarin Goby, Maui Maui, Regal Koi, and Whale Shark. These designs are really cool because they are all multicolored to look like the body of a real mermaid or fish. For example, the Whale Shark and Regal Koi designs actually resemble the patterns of a whale shark or koi fish.
As with most mermaid tails you can swim in, these tails are made out of a polyester spandex blend, so you’ll get the stretch and comfortability of a regular swimsuit. This material is safe for chlorinated and salt water, and you can easily toss it in the washing machine to clean it.
Each tail comes with a Finis Aquarius monofin, so you can have a lot of power and speed in the water. If you need to remove the monofin, there is a quick-release strap to free your feet. You can easily take the monofin out of the tail by unzipping the zipper on the side of the tail. This particular version is designed to fit adults. If you want to get matching mermaid tails for your children, you can check out the children’s version here.
Some mermaid tails for swimming take it to the next level, and the MerNation Genesis Edition is one of those tails. These tails are handmade out of 100% Dragon Skin Silicone. This high-quality silicone meets the industry standards and is safe for your skin, but you won’t want to put it in the washing machine. The best part about these tails is that the silicone and detail make it extremely realistic.
Children and adults can enjoy having their very own tail because the designers make each tail based off of your own measurements. Since each tail is a custom fit, you will be able to swim a lot easier. You also have the option of customizing the color of the tail by blending any two colors together. Each Genesis Edition tail comes with a monofin molded into the fluke, so you can’t change the fin once you choose your favorite style. You can choose between the Finis Wave or the Rapid monofin.
MerNation makes different types of mermaid tails, but this tail is designed to feature thinner and lighter scales. The bottom line is this: a custom, handmade mermaid tail is going to cost you more money, but the results are more than worth it. Nothing compares to owning a one-of-a-kind tail that makes you feel like a real mermaid.
The last of our favorite mermaid tails for sale is the MerNation Full Silicone Tail. As the name suggests, this tail is made out of 100% Dragon Skin Silicone, so again, it meets industry standards and safety requirements.
The tail includes a monofin molded into the fluke, and it should not be washed in a washing machine. This tail is much like the Genesis Edition, but you can only choose one tail color, rather than two. However, you can still choose any color you like, and you also have the awesome option to add on scale highlighting, a glitter top coat, and individual glitter scale accents for an extra cost. You can also choose to add a dorsal or pec fin, and you can even add extra fins to the heel, calf, and hips.
Essentially, you can add as many as you want wherever you want, but the design team will work with you to make sure it is still functional. The best part about this mermaid tail is that you will receive photos and updates throughout the entire process.
From receiving your measurements and discussing your vision to the finished product, you will be able to communicate with the designers to make sure your tail is perfect. It's a fantastic product worth checking out.
Can't get enough of all this mermaidy goodness? We totally get it. :)

Young children, teenagers, and even adults are getting into the whole mermaid craze. A mermaid tail is a great way to immerse yourself in the fantasy world of merpeople. They come in all sorts of designs and colors, but not every tail is made for swimming. If you’d like to learn about swimmable mermaid tails, then you’ve landed on the right page.
First things first – the tail and fin material. One of the easiest ways to distinguish whether a mermaid tail is made for swimming or not is by looking at the tail’s material. In general, there are 4 types of swimmable waterproof materials used to make high-performance tails.
Dragon Skin Silicone
Dragon Skin silicone is the most durable type of swimmable material available. It’s also the flashiest and priciest. However, if you’re looking for the best mermaid experience in terms of appearance and function, this is for you.
+ Lasts for several years
+ Usually covered by warranty for rips and tears
+ The most beautiful mermaid tails use Dragon Skin
- Long production time-
Silicone and Neoprene Composite
This composite is less expensive, almost as durable, and can be formed into beautiful works of art. They’re also on the light side and a lot easier to wear.
+ Style with price discount
+ May be covered by warranty
- Discolors easily
- Rips more easily than Dragon Skin
As we move further down the list, the cost of the materials is cheaper, but their durability becomes more questionable. But with proper care, a sparkly sequin hybrid tail can last for several years.
+ Sparkly when underwater
+ Cheaper than silicone
- Tears a lot more easily than silicone
- Not entirely leak-proof
Spandex is one of the most popular waterproof materials. They’re a great budget-friendly option for swimmable wear, but they rip rather easily.
+ Relatively inexpensive
+ Easy to put on and take off
- Weakest of the four materials
- Dull appearance
When placing an order, the designer will either provide you with a set of instructions on how to measure yourself for a well-fitting tail or select from a list of preset sizes. If you’re getting one custom-made, then we’d recommend finding a designer that creates based on your exact figure. Here is the 4-step process of recording your body’s measurement in preparation for the tail.
Waist and hip circumferences
Using a sewing tape measure, carefully place it around your waist. The tape measure should make contact along the entire circumference without any wiggle room. Swimmable mermaid tail waistbands are made to stretch so try not to include any slack in your measurements. Do the same thing for your waist – this measurement should be slightly wider than your waist circumference.
Belly button to floor
Next, you’ll want to measure the length of the tail. Starting from your belly button, take the sewing tape measure and record the distance to the ground while standing straight. Based on users’ experience, if the tail is too short, it will become prone to ripping when pulling it on. Too long and you’ll have a floppy tail.
Some mermaid tails require the use of flippers for swimming. If the flippers are built into the end of the tail, then the designer will ask for your shoe size. Otherwise, you can purchase compatible flippers (monofins) separately.
Just because you have a mermaid tail doesn’t mean you can swim as well as the fishes. In fact, swimming with your feet tied together is a lot different – and a lot more difficult – than swimming without a tail. Here are 4 tips veteran merpeople have shared regarding how to use and swim with your tail on.
Join a mermaid community and swimming lessons
Nothing makes swimming more fun than being accompanied by other mermaids. There are plenty of mermaid communities in major cities around the world where experienced mermaids offer swimming lessons and care tips to new members. Since swimming with a tail is hardly like swimming while pumping your two legs, you should consider getting some help.
Gently massage air pockets out of the tail
While pulling the mermaid tail on, you may find pockets of air trapped inside of the leg cavity. These air pockets, referred to as “mermaid farts,” don’t pose any danger, but they can make swimming with the tail uncomfortable. Before jumping into the water, be sure to massage as many air pockets out of the tail as possible.
NEVER swim alone
Even if you’re an experienced mermaid-style swimmer, it’s not recommended to venture into the depths of the water alone. Many public swimming pools with lifeguards allow swimmers to don mermaid tails. This is the safest option if you don’t have a mer-buddy with you. Put on the tail at the edge of the pool/ocean/lake/etc. Standing up and walking around with your tail is a recipe for disaster. At the very least, the reinforced tail fins can end up snapping or the bottom of the tail can become permanently discolored after dragging it across rough surfaces. You could also potentially puncture the material with your toes. Put the tail on when seated at the edge of a body of water.
And please, only swim supervised and with a lifeguard on duty - always be cautious and exercise discretion.
Practice, practice, practice
Finally, you can never perfect your mermaid swim form without practice. Mermaid communities typically come to life during the hot summer months, so this is the best time to get some first-hand guidance and lessons on swimming with a tail.
If you’re investing in a mermaid tail, you might as well go the whole 9 yards. Here are a few accessories you can show off at your next merpeople gathering.
Mermaid bras use real seashells, pearls, and nautical rope. With proper adjustment, you won’t have to worry about being too revealing in the public. They come in a variety of different colors so choose one that matches your tail perfectly.
A mermaid-themed t-shirt will let the world know you’re a part of a mermaiding community. They’re typically made of a waterproof material like spandex, but some are made of cotton and not an ideal piece for wearing in the pool.
With your tail on, the only thing left to do is accessorize. Mermaid-themed tiaras, necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets will add an extra dimension of wow to your overall mermaid appearance. You may need to remove your jewelry when swimming in public pools.
Decorative Waist Belts
Many designers will ask their clients whether they’d like to include a decorative belt on the waist of the mermaid tail. Though not necessary, these belts really help in softening the transition from tail to belly.
